A civil marriage is a marriage without religious elements.
Personal data is information that can be linked to a living person. This may include name, address and social security number. Photos of people are also classified as personal data.
We need to process your personal data in order to carry out your wedding. We process personal data in accordance with the General Data Protection Regulation.
The municipal executive board is the data controller for the information you provide to us. We pass on the information to the County Administrative Board.
Processing of personal data in connection with civil marriages
If you are a registered partner under the previous Partnership Act, you can convert your partnership into marriage. You can do this by filing a joint written notification to the Swedish Tax Agency or visiting a service office.

Another way to convert a registered partnership into a marriage is for a qualified marriage officiant to marry you.
To book a wedding ceremony at City Hall, book an appointment in the e-service Book a wedding. We need your birth certificate, to be able to carry out the wedding. Birth certificates are ordered from the Swedish Tax Agency.

You do not need to carry out a new examination of impediments in connection with the change from registered partnership to marriage, whether you have a marriage ceremony or not.

The documents that come to us are public documents. This means that we are obliged to disclose the documents for inspection or copying, if someone asks for it.

After the wedding, the officiant signs the marriage certificate.
If the marriage is in the City Hall, the marriage administrator sends the certificate to the Swedish Tax Agency, where the marriage is registered in the population register.
If you have a private wedding, i.e. in a place other than City Hall, the wedding officiant will send the marriage certificate to the City Hall. The marriage administrator at the City Hall then forwards the certificate to the Swedish Tax Agency without delay.
It is common for one of the spouses to change their surname in connection with the wedding. You apply for a name change either before or after the wedding. The form for applying for a name change is available on the Swedish Tax Agency's website.

If you change your name before the wedding, but after applying for an examination of impediments, the name on the examination of impediments is not the same as the new name. In this case, you must send a register extract or a birth certificate for marriage from the Swedish Tax Agency to the City Hall.
